Carpet
Bombing
In a conference call with analysts last
October, Mohawk Industries CEO Jeff
Lorberbaum described the economic
horizon as if he were at the front of a
roller coaster about to crest a steep
incline. "We have a limited forward
view," he explained.
It was downhill from there. In late
2007, carpeting's top three
manufacturers, North Georgia-based
Mohawk, Shaw and Beaulieu, idled 1,000
textile workers in five plants. So far
this year, Mohawk has shuttered three
mills in the Georgia towns of Dalton,
Armuchee and Dahlonega.

Thousands without
jobs in carpet export hub
Saubhadra Chatterji / Bhadohi - Three
carpets, wet with chemical-laced water,
could be seen on the large, barren field
in Sarroi village of Bhadohi in Uttar
Pradesh, soaking the afternoon sunlight.
The far end of the field was dotted with
two abandoned, naked brick structures.
“The first one was migrant workers’
house. The other had my carpet-making
looms. I used to wash (the process of
drying chemical-laced carpets) a hundred
carpets on a single day. Now, as you can
see, there are just three of them,” Asir
Ahmed said. “Like a pariah dog in search
of food, every morning I run everywhere
in search of orders.”

Recently, Masoud Mirkazemi, Commerce
Minister of Iran, called for the
formation of a national consortium of
hand-woven carpets for the exports. This
will help the age old handicraft to
survive the fierce competitions from the
cheap imitations....
