Not everyone
is satisfied with what they have. And
there is information loaded everywhere
on what to do and what not to. With so
much to know we try to bring some common
queries generally asked by carpet users.
What is the difference between Rugs
and Carpets?
Technically, the two terms are used
interchangeably across the world. For
instance, in America a carpet would mean
a floor covering that applies to
wall-to-wall flooring and rugs are area
specific or movable floor covering used
as centerpiece on the floor. While in
India both terms are used to denote a
floor covering.
Is there a difference between the
materials with which a carpet or a rug
is made?
No. There is no difference between the
types of materials used.

Do I really need to know about carpet
fibres?
Why not? It is vital for any buyer to
know what he is getting! The quality of
any carpet or rugs is directly related
to the amount and quality of the fibre
that goes into the pile. The better the
fibre and the more densely it is packed,
the better the carpet will perform.
Thin, less dense carpet will lose its
surface appearance faster.
What is a high traffic area?
High traffic areas are the ones that are
prone to exposure of crowd or a group of
people or where heavy furniture's are
kept. Before purchasing any rug or
carpet, it is important to know which
area they are purchased for as you may
end up buying carpet of delicate fabric
which is easily worn if kept in such
areas. For example carpets or rugs made
of pure silk are best for light traffic
areas or as wall coverings.
Carpets or rugs made of wool are
durable. But are they the best for high
traffic areas or a large family?
Surely, wool rugs and carpets are
available in varied designs and patterns
and the option looks lucrative when you
want to go for durability. However, wool
and polyester do not clean easily and
doesn’t tolerate a lot of abrasion.
Nylon fibre is best suited in such a
case.
Why are some carpets measured by
square yard and others by square foot?
Although carpet once was measured solely
by the square yard, measuring carpet by
the square foot has become standard and
puts it in line with the measurement of
other floor coverings, such as ceramic
tile and hardwood.
Should I use a professional cleaning
service regularly or clean carpet it all
by myself?
A mix of both will help. Professional
cleaning becomes vital when you want to
reach at the deepest of your carpet
fibre. It is always advisable to vacuum
your carpet regularly to take of dust
and sand particles. Also, if you spill
over something, wipe it immediately
before it soaks deep into the fabric.
You can also use cleaners or shampoos
from your nearby stores. Best results
can be achieved if you follow the
instructions thoroughly.
While cleaning carpet or rugs at
home, should I use some precautions?
It is suggested to be very careful while
using strong chemical products
especially the cleaning shampoos from
the stores as it can be quite irritating
to the nose and the lungs. You should
wear gloves and mask so that you are not
affected by the toxic materials in them.
In addition, you need to wear goggles to
protect your eyes from corrosive carpet
cleaning chemicals. You should also turn
off your air conditioner and open your
windows while you do this.
Is it normal for carpets to shed?
If your carpet is new and is with a cut
pile, shedding is quite common. The
loose fibres are easily removed with
regular vacuuming. This should not
affect your carpet’s quality and should
diminish after a few weeks or months
depending on vacuuming frequency.
How often should I vacuum?
It’s best to vacuum your carpet at least
twice a week, if you can’t vacuum your
entire house this often, at least vacuum
the high traffic areas at least twice a
week.
Can I save money by buying a less
expensive carpet and putting the best
cushion under it?
A good cushion is obviously critical to
carpet performance, but remember that
you walk directly on the carpet. So, if
your carpet does not meet your needs and
lifestyle, you'll have a cushion that
feels great, but you may not be
satisfied with the look or wear of your
carpet.
If I know the weight or other
technical specifications, can I compare
products?
Using technical specifications of a
product can give you a guide, but there
are many other factors that can alter
the comparison. For example, two carpets
made to the same specifications but made
with different fibres will perform,
look, and feel differently in the same
environment.
