The key
industries that are well established in
the state of Rajasthan are agro
industries, cement, ceramic, food
processing, gaur gum, hand tools,
handicraft, handmade paper, gems &
jewellery, marble, oil industry and
stone quarrying. This state is known to
produce around 40% of the country’s
wool. Most of the rural families are
dependent on Agriculture and Livestock.
People residing in the Northern and
Western part of Rajasthan are fully
dependant on Livestock.
According to Rajasthan Chamber of
Commerce and Industries (RCCI), the
carpet sector supports more than 30,
00,000 people in the state and employs
around 35000 people in Jaipur and nearby
areas. Beawar, Jaisalmer, Bikaner are
major areas known for wool mandis. On an
international scale, the state is well
known for ethnic carpets, elegant
Namdahs, Pattu, quilts and woollen
shawls.
Rajasthan’s carpet industry is known to
deliver quality carpets with majestic
designs. The designs have a strong
influence from the Mughal Dynasty.
Hunting patterns with trees and floral
motifs are usually the designs found.
Most of the carpets are hand-knotted and
are manufactured with floral or angular
motifs. These carpets are known for
their high quality of craftsmanship and
colour-fastness, which makes it more
durable.
Main centres for hand-knotted carpets in
the states are Bikaner, Jaipur and Ajmer.
Jaipur and its adjacent districts are
the major manufacturing centres in
Rajasthan that share a substantial part
(15 percent) of total carpet
manufacturing from India. The erstwhile
rulers of Jaipur took keen interest in
patronizing the carpet making art during
their times.
